YO Philly! Here's Your Much Needed Dose Of Reality

Allow me to begin by first reluctantly saying that I'm not so anxious to see my Dallas Cowboys win this Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. I believe a Dallas win will only prolong the firing of Head Coach Jason Garrett, thus hindering the growth of the team.
With that said, I'll still be rooting for a Dallas victory. After all... it's still the Eagles.
I'm hearing and reading the nonsense out of Philly and felt the need to get my opinion and perspective out there once again.
The Eagle fans constantly say Dallas hasn't won a title since the '90s....... really?
I'm getting close to the big 5-0 and have yet to witness a Philadelphia Eagle super bowl victory. I did however witness the Eagles LOSE their only 2 SB appearances, a pathetic 24 years apart. Eagle fans like to say Dallas fans live in the past but when you've been in the NFL since 1933 and ONLY have 3 championships, with the most recent coming in 1960. I wasn't even born yet. You literally have to be insane to downplay another franchises successes when you haven't won the ultimate prize in over 50 years.
We're talking about a city that raised boxing Champion Bernard Hopkins and was the adopted home of former world champion Joe Frazier and yet they idolize Rocky Balboa, a totally fictitious character.

Insane.
***END UPDATE***

When the Cardinals left the NFC East the Eagles became the misfits of the division by being the only NFC East team since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 to not win a title. In fact, as stated above, Philly's last title was 10 years before the merger. Dallas' franchise came into existence the same year of Philly's last title and have a healthy 5-0 edge in Championships since. The Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins all have MULTIPLE Super Bowl wins and the Eagles have NONE.
I see Eagle fans wearing their "NFC Champions" and "NFC East Champions" gear and laugh.
I really don't care that the Eagles won more games in the Andy Reid era than Dallas. It's always about HOW YOU FINISH YOUR SEASON.
Does anyone really care that the Buffalo Bills went to and lost 4 straight Super Bowls in the 90's? Does anyone care that Buffalo won back to back AFL championships in 1964 and 1965? Not many.

More facts for the ignorant....

Dallas Cowboys leads Philadelphia Eagles (62-47)

Don't just take my word for it, see for yourself.

The Dallas Cowboys and the Need for Change

Dallas Cowboy bloggers are wondering whether it will be Aaron Rodgers or Matt Flynn under center when they face the Packers.
I say that it doesn't matter who the opposing QB is. Every QB seems to pick us apart anyway.
I'm keenly aware of the fact that the second straight Defensive coordinator in Dallas has had to deal with an obscene amount of injuries.
My problem with the defensive Brain Trust is the lack of adjustments employed throughout each and every game. What is successful for the opposing offenses in the first quarter is usually successful in the remaining three quarters.
The failure to adjust throughout the game applies to both sides of the ball. I often feel embarrassed by our coach's inability or stubborn refusal to adjust on the fly.
Get rid of Jason Garrett and Bill Callahan because they don't know how to get the most out of the offensive weapons at their disposal despite having a defense that struggles to keep any team under 30. I'm amazed and very disappointed in the coach's inability to get Dez double digit touches every game.
Who wants to follow a coach that handcuffs his own team each week?
I'm amazed that everyone chooses to blame the injury ravaged, patchwork defense while letting Garrett, Callahan, and Romo off the hook for calling and running plays as if we have a shutdown defense.
Why be unflinchingly conservative on offense when your defense is getting torched?
Why does Romo purposely throw the ball into the turf while going for it on 4th down and losing by a few touchdowns?
I wonder how many INT triggers Romo has written into his contract. I find it hard to believe that Romo would suddenly go from seemingly careless gunslinger to timid game manager without some anti-interception clauses inserted into his contract.
Why so few deep passes when you have a dominant weapon such as Dez ?
Why do we hear Garrett at nearly every post-game press conference making excuses but never admitting his failure to adjust throughout the game?
I've been saying for a while that Garrett's problem is he always coaches NOT TO LOSE instead of COACHING TO WIN.
We need a Head Coach that is more aggressive and innovative, a coach such as John Gruden.
I REPEAT... Jerry Jones please give Gruden what ever he wants to bring a spark and heart back to Dallas.
Get rid of Monte Kiffen and promote Rod Marinelli.
Then build a solid foundation by drafting OL/DL in the first two rounds for the next 3 or 4 years. Not the flashy draft that Jerry Jones likes but it's the draft Jerry Jones needs.
There will be a lot of promising QBs coming out of college in the next 2 or 3 years. I'm willing to bet that a passer with Franchise QB potential will be available in the third round.
Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston come to mind as QBs that could possibly be available due to different circumstances. I can only imagine a Dallas team with one of those guys throwing deep darts to Dez and Terrance Williams. Playing behind a line with now-veteran linemen Tyron Smith, Ron Leary, and Travis Frederick and two more first or second rounders.
I can only imagine Gruden figuring out new ways to take advantage of the assets at his disposal. Garrett appears to have NO clue.
NFL teams tend to mirror their head coach.
The Cowboys are no different.
The head coach and his team haven't improved much at all.

How The New York Giants Have Ruined It For Dallas Cowboys Fans

It's Saturday and I was just subjected to yet another one of  DallasCowboys.com's  Mickey Spagnola's  fluff pieces.

Please see the following link.

http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/article-MickeySpagnola/Spagnola-The-Facts-Of-The-Cowboys-Matter/92ab9d35-a915-4837-8af0-230e310a1a33

My comments on DC.com never seem to see the light of day so I've decided to get my thoughts out this way.

Here we go... enjoy.

Wow Mick,
You NEVER cease to amaze me!
It's always SHOULDA WOULDA COULDA with you.
You are a professional TURD POLISHER.
Your FACTS are meaningless and worthless. The only numbers that MATTER are wins and losses when it comes down to it.
I totally understand the defense has once again been decimated by injuries BUT they still only stopped one team all year, the Rams. The takeaways have increased but they've been allowing record numbers each week.
Let's not forget week 1 when the defense was at it's healthiest, Eli Manning and co. put up 500 yards on the Cowboys Defense which was an omen of things to come.
Sooner or later the scheme has to be questioned.
Owner/President/GM Jerry Jones publicly said Coach Garrett's job was safe.
Should it be?
Please allow me to first go on record to say contrary to what many others feel, I think Jerry the GM hasn't done too bad as of late. I believe it's been a combination of injuries, bad scheming, and bad coaching that's stifled the progress of the Cowboys.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that the New York Giants have ruined it for us Dallas Cowboys fans by stumbling through the regular season only to get hot late to win 2 Lombardi trophies in the 21st century.
Jones always mentions that all a team needs to do is get in the "post season tournament" and anything can happen.
Just because it's been done before doesn't mean that approach is the best way to go.
I understand that every team's first objective is to win their division, but that's setting the bar rather low in the once upper-tier NFC East.
Does anyone believe Bill Walsh's 49ers main concern was winning the NFC West when they were winning Lombardis?
Being a game or so better than the rest of their division wouldn't have produced the 49er dynasty.
Why does Jones think that being competitive in the NFC East is good enough?
The NFC East is a shell of what is once was, and Jones is happy to win the division?
You aim low and you'll get substandard results.
The Giants have one thing Dallas doesn't have, a proven head coach. The Giants' players tend to start most seasons with a lack of focus and execution.
The annual self-inflicted struggles the Giants endure are rarely any fault of Coach Coughlin.
Over the last season and a half there have been at least a  handful of losses that can be directly attributed to Coach Garrett.
I tweeted with envy during the Saints/Falcons game last Thursday night about Coach Payton's aggressiveness and total grasp of every aspect of the game.
The Saints final possession of the first half was proof positive of my point. They began that possession with approximately 40 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. Coach Garrett would have called a run or two and went in the locker room. Payton came out and had Drew Brees firing away immediately. You never know what can happen if you don't even try. Reminds me of Dallas' loss to Detroit, Garrett called 3 running plays in a feeble attempt to run out the clock. Or even worse, Garrett would have Romo trot out there to take a knee.
For those that say Bill Callahan is the O.C. not Garrett, it's Garrett's team. Period.
As a lifelong Dallas fan and supporter, I'm disturbed and disgusted by the nonchalant attitude of our coach and QB after these ridiculous losses.
Why does Romo appear to be satisfied by not throwing a bunch of interceptions while the offense gets more stagnant each game?
I'll take 53 players and a head coach that have Dez Bryant's fire, passion, and disgust for losing.
I'll take John Gruden or Bill Cowher's intensity over Garrett's mellow, cerebral demeanor.
After all, it's football, not a quantum physics class.
It doesn't take a MENSA membership to figure out that you MUST find creative ways to get your BEST playmaker the ball as much as possible.
Garrett needs to stop making excuses for why Dez Bryant isn't getting a minimum of TEN touches per game!
Imagine Jerry Rice getting 2 or 3 targets in an entire game.
Garrett needs to stop throwing players under the bus because the truly great coaches don't lose games without trying to get their best weapons involved.
NO EXCUSES.
I will be the first to admit that I'll be glued to the couch Sunday afternoon rooting for the Cowboys but I won't be sitting there wishing we emulated the Giants.
What I don't want to see is the same routine.
It's NOT working!
Winning a horrible division isn't something to be too proud of.
The New York Giants have ruined it for Dallas Cowboys fans!

The Dallas Cowboys & the Painfully Obvious

It's almost Thanksgiving and Jason Garrett and Bill Callahan are adding wrinkles to increase Dez Bryant's touches.
REALLY?!
When I watch Peyton Manning audible to a WR screen over and over in game after game it really frustrates and embarrasses me as a Cowboy fan.
Am I to believe that with all of the knowledge and experience our coaches bring to the table that more creative ways couldn't be schemed up to get your BEST playmaker the ball?
To say it's a lack of protection or Dez's inability to beat double teams is an insult to my intelligence!
To underutilize a dominant player such as Dez is cause enough to get coaches fired.
Garrett said after the Detroit game that "when you have a player like Megatron you can throw the ball his way even when doubled because he can make the play anyway"....
DALLAS HAS THE SAME TYPE OF PLAYER IN #88!!!!!!!!!!
So what's the excuse?
You don't need a 3 step drop to throw a WR screen.
Can you imagine Peyton electing not to attempt at least 5 passes Demaryius Thomas' way?
It flat out won't happen.
Is Tony Romo so INT conscience after his extension that he's entirely too gun shy?
Dez should be put in motion and/or put in the slot way more often.
Garrett seems to NEVER admit ANY coaching mistakes, instead he throws his players under the bus. Following the Detroit debacle coach Garrett was asked about the play where Tyron Smith was flagged for holding on the 3rd down run by Phillip Tanner. Garret responded to a reporter's question with the following.
"I don't want to be critical of a player right here, but the design of the play was to stick it up in there and get what you can get," Garrett said. "We're on the 35-yard line and you just want to go north and south and handle the situation that way."
"Certainly you can try to go man for man and tell him exactly what you want him to do but when we design that play from that personnel group that's where that play hits and ???typically??? that's where it goes," Garrett said. "That's why we call it and he instinctively saw some daylight and green grass and bounced the thing all the way back and I think that contributed to the holding penalty."
Really? You didn't need to go "man for man" for instruction. You only needed to talk to ELEVEN men during the previous time out. PERIOD. If  eleven guys were still too many for you to coach up during the most critical time out of the ENTIRE game than giving personal instruction to the left side of the line and Tanner should have sufficed. Why not tell the left guard and tackle to keep their hands inside no matter which way Tanner cut? If Smith was coached to just raise his arms the moment Tanner cut to the outside the penalty would have been avoided. PERIOD.
To hear the coach indirectly say he isn't responsible for a player's mistake is an indictment on said coach's leadership and game management abilities.
Why coach scared at the end of the Detroit game? Why run THREE plays in a row knowing you had so many runs for negative or NO yards?
Why repeatedly run into the brick wall when you have a first ballot Hall of Fame safety valve in Jason Witten?
Why repeatedly run into the brick wall when you have a receiver that attacks the ball thrown his way as well as ANYONE that's EVER played the game?
I understand the need to gameplan for each opponent but the best teams execute their style of play each week and impose their will regardless of the opposition.
When you coach NOT TO LOSE you often cause what you're sheepishly trying to avoid.
ONE first down at the end of the Detroit game would have sealed the deal.
Instead, Garrett chose to handcuff his team, costing them a victory.
I immediately tweeted after the Detroit loss that I wondered why Garrett didn't try some screens instead of running into a brick wall when it wasn't working. Screens are basically long handoffs that get the player out in space and usually keep the clock running without much risk.
I wrote a few months ago that Garrett deserved credit for changing the culture at Valley Ranch by holding players accountable.
It's time to hold the Head Coach accountable.
I feel that Garrett always coaches NOT TO LOSE.
A high IQ is never a BAD thing but I often feel that Garrett is over-thinking.
We need a Head Coach that REFUSES to lose while sitting on his hands.
We need an aggressive coach that isn't afraid to let his team go win a close game.
Jerry Jones, please give JOHN GRUDEN whatever he wants and allow him to change the ATTITUDE and IDENTITY of the team.
I'm tired of seeing my 'Boys turning the other cheek.

The timid play calling and lack of killer instinct from the coach is painfully obvious.

Tom Brady & The Double Standard

I feel I need to vent about the Tom Brady tantrum on live tv after the Monday night game.
The whole world saw and heard what Brady said to the referee going into the tunnel after Monday's controversial non-call to end a great football game.
What the whole world didn't see was Brady being called out for verbally abusing the ref. Noone saw that because IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!
I've heard MANY  tv  personalities say he was "understandably upset". Really? He wasn't being respectful in any way but people jump through hoops to excuse his tirade. Brady didn't even bother to find Cam Newton for the customary after-game handshake. Maybe he did it near the locker room but the damage was already done.
I tweeted immediately after hearing Brady's profanity laced tirade that if that were Cam doing that it would have been a bigger issue than the non-call to end the game.
I anxiously waited to hear the talking heads address the tirade but it was basically ignored. All they wanted to talk about the non-call. AMAZING!
When Brian Billick began to personally attacked Dez on live television a few weeks ago I immediately tweeted that NOONE NOT on the sideline KNEW what Dez was saying. How prophetic was that? When the Dez audio surfaced the talking heads just paid it lip service. AMAZING!
Brady curses at his rookie wide receivers and slams his helmet on national tv and he's called "fiery". Dez is trying to motivate his lethargic team and he's slandered by those same talking heads. AMAZING!
I read yesterday that "once the final whistle blows Brady and the ref are private citizens what Brady says is no one's business" Wow.....AMAZING!
People say that since Brady is a Championship winning QB he should get a pass for his tirades. Sorry but that isn't how it works.
Notice how people bend over backwards to make excuses for the biggest WHINER in the game today?
People even thought it was cute when Brady's wife trashed his receivers publicly. AMAZING!
Those same people judged Dez and countless other players without much information.
I'm used to Brady's demanding a flag several times EACH game but what I will ALWAYS have a problem with is how he is treated as compared to other players in the league.
The Double Standard is alive and well, and it is WRONG!

Goodbye Houston, Hello Dallas?

Hello Dallas Cowboy Fans,

I must apologize for the length of time between my first and second blogs. I'm dealing with various health issues.

This 2013 season has already had it's share of ups and downs. Don't fret because our 'Boys are surely on the rise.

I'm well aware of the fans saying this year's team is no different from previous years.

I say those fans are wrong.

I see a Dallas team that has gotten younger AND better. Rookies Travis Frederick, J.J. Wilcox, and Terrance Williams(although temporarily, for now) have stepped into starting roles and performed very well.

Dallas Cowboy fans...the future is very bright!

Gavin Escobar, Devonte Holloman, and B.W. Webb are making contributions already.

Dez Bryant is an absolute BEAST! PERIOD.
As I've tweeted about Dez before the start of the 2013 season, "Greatness is knocking on your door...open the door and take him Hostage!"

By the way Nate Burleson.....

Dez never claimed to be or be better than Calvin Johnson.
Dez just truthfully stated that he can and does do the same things as Calvin Johnson.

Dez IS NOT Calvin Johnson.

Dez is Dez and that alone puts him in rarified air! I wouldn't trade Dez for Megatron...PERIOD.

No disrespect intended towards Calvin Johnson BUT we already have an uncoverable WR.

Dez... DO YOU!  Stiff arm the HATERS.

Nate Burleson IS NOT Calvin Johnson.

Nate Burleson IS NOT Dez Bryant.

Nate Burleson IS NOT  even the 3rd best receiver on his own team!

Nate Burleson is NATE BURLESON.

Enough about Nate Burleson. Let's get back to the players that are relevant.

Which brings me to Number 82.....

Jason Witten is STILL Jason Witten. First ballot Hall of Famer. PERIOD.

The development of Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley have erased any reservations of having to take the field without the services of the oft-injured but much-loved Miles Austin.
Get healthy Miles, then come back and be the beast that you were when you had your breakout year.

The immediate future is VERY bright.

I've been a Dallas Cowboy and NFL fan for over 40 years now. I recognize when a team is taking the proper steps to become a true championship contender.

Don't agree with me?

Consider a few facts.
1. Coach Jason Garrett HAS changed the culture at Valley Ranch. His personality and steadiness has had a very positive effect on the team
.
2. Monte Kiffen and Rod Marinelli have changed the defensive unit's mindset. Turnovers have multiplied. It's extremely obvious that Our Defense truly enjoys playing for their coaches and have bought into their philosophy. The effort and hustle of EVERY defensive player when inserted into the game has been phenomenal.

3. Pro Personnel Guru Will McClay has been brilliant! It's been amazing to see guy after guy come in from "off the street" and be immediate factors on our team.

* a little side note: My fiancée and I nicknamed George Selvie "Last Week" because he was signed "off the street" a week and a half before the preseason started and immediately made his presence felt in the team's first preseason game. My fiancée didn't know him by name so I repeatedly referred to him as "Last Week" as he was making play after play in the preseason and regular season.
Truth be told, Nick Hayden, Drake Nevis, Cesar Rayford, and others have come in and made big contributions. Much credit goes to McClay for finding the talent. Kudos to Kiffen and Marinelli for teaching and coaching their guys up.

4. There are silver linings to be recognized, even in losses.

4a. Our 'Boys were a RARE Dan Bailey missed field goal away from beating the eventual Super Bowl Champion Ravens IN Baltimore last year.

4b. Our 'Boys fell a couple plays short of beating the NFL's lone unbeaten team in Kansas City. They lost that game by 1 point! In that crazed atmosphere, they more than held their own.

4c. We all recall the "Shootout" against Peyton Manning and his video game offense. Proof Positive that our 'Boys have the ability to score with any team in the league.

5. Brian Waters was CLEARLY worth the wait and effort, even if we only have him for this year before he re-retires again. Just having him around for the 2013 season MUST be unquantifiable in terms of the knowledge and wisdom the young O-linemen can glean from him.

6. The aforementioned O-line is giving Tony Romo  the type of time in the pocket that hasn't been seen in Dallas since Troy Aikman was under center. More time in the pocket has directly led to a much improved Romo. Ignore the haters Tony, you're a Baller! PERIOD.
I will admit that the run blocking hasn't been as good, but a healthy DeMarco Murray would make a big difference.

7. Let's not forget last Sunday's game against Philadelphia.
The expected "shootout" was SHOT DOWN!
Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick combined to basically shut DeSean Jackson down.
The Dallas front seven kept the always dangerous LeSean McCoy in check the ENTIRE game.
Dallas' defense made Chip Kelly look like the second coming of Steve Spurrier.

By the way, let me be the first to predict the hype surrounding Kelly's "High Octane" offense will turn soon into Kelly-bashing by the Philly press and fans.

I'm 47 years old and have seen the same madness repeated in Philly year after year (the true definition of insanity?!).

They always want the backup QB in Philly.

They had McNabb but wanted Jeff Garcia, Kevin Kolb, and Michael Vick.
They have Vick but think(or thought) Nick Foles is better.
They got Foles last Sunday but quickly wanted Matt Barkley.
Foles AND Barkley struggled and guess what?
Now the Philly press and fans can't wait for Vick to play again.
Different season, same song in Philly.

* another side note: LeSean McCoy, I too am from Harrisburg, Cougars forever, BUT it's IMPOSSIBLE to root for you until you no longer play for the Eagles. Besides, you really need to go elsewhere if you truly want a Super Bowl ring. History IS Truth ...Truth IS Truth. numbers don't lie....Just saying.

8. Dallas has once again been decimated by injuries but the team's swag is unwavering. Credit goes to the ENTIRE organization for staying focused and embracing the "next man up" philosophy.

9. Sean Lee, Jason Hatcher, and Brandon Carr are playing at an All-Pro level.

10. Dallas can still look forward to Tyrone Crawford, Ben Bass, and possibly Anthony Spencer returning from season-ending injuries and making big contributions next year.

If the 10 things I listed above doesn't give you optimism for our 'Boys future, you must NOT be a true Dallas Cowboys fan.

One final note: I personally tweeted EVERY and ANY person that I thought could help me promote an idea of mine.Yes, I even tweeted Jerry Jones and Will McClay. I know they know what they're doing and I'm not trying to tell them how to do their jobs BUT we can vastly improve our team without having to break the bank.
The Houston Texans just released 3 players for allegedly smoking marijuana in a team hotel room. I truly believe the Cowboys now have the support system, mentoring program, and team leadership to take a chance on Sam Montgomery and possibly Cierre Wood.
They are 2 very talented players at positions of need for our 'Boys.
I'm sure both players were both embarrassed AND humbled by their release from the Texans.
They both should have the "I must prove everyone wrong" attitude now and will add quality depth to some NFL roster very soon.
Why not the Dallas Cowboys' roster?

So I say......
"Goodbye Houston, Hello Dallas?"

Until next time..... GO COWBOYS!

Let there be light...Day 1

Hello world . My name is Terrance. It's nice to finally have an outlet to express what goes through this hyperactive brain of mine.

I'm a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan that happens to live less than an hour from both NYC and Philly. I've been to many games in Philly and know many Eagles and Giants fans so you can definitely call me battle tested.
I look forward to the 2013 season. Dallas fans have much to be excited about IF the offensive line can at least reach "slightly above average" status.
I'm sure Romo's in-game decisions will improve with a better line in front of him. Travis Frederick was a GREAT draft choice..period. Having a solid center is often overlooked. Frederick is highly cerebral and that is his biggest strength.
Dez is a new and improved man as well as player. His potential is limitless. His hunger for greatness is growing day to day. I honestly expect Dez and Julio Jones to be the top 2 receivers in the NFL for the next few years. mark my words.
It's nice to have a healthy roster for change. With that said, I must admit that this year's draft added much needed skill position depth. Randle and Williams are going to be good enough to step in if needed due to an injury.
I like the Gavin Escobar pick but I believe James Hanna will eventually be a 100+ reception TE for us. Escobar's red zone abilities alone warranted the pick. You can never have enough mismatches.
I like the defensive scheme switch. The most important thing is the simplification of the defense. The more intricate the scheme, the greater possibility of mistakes.
I fully expect Sean Lee and Bruce Carter to be permanent fixtures in "best at their position" debates.
I dont understand why the "experts" question whether DeMarcus Ware  and Anthony Spencer will be successful making the transition to defensive end. These guys played with their hand in the dirt in college and thrived. This is a huge POSITIVE for the defense. Now they can focus on doing what they do best, which brings me to my next declaration.
I also expect the defense to at least double their takeaway total from last year. Constant pressure up front with a D-Line that will be deeper and better than most choose to believe will directly lead to more takeaway opportunities.
I would personally like to eventually see a pairing of Matt Johnson and J.J. Wilcox for a hard hitting and ball-hawking tandem in the defensive backfield. Those two guys have the instints and natural playmaking ability that can't be taught. They just get to the ball. period.
Look for Coach Callahan calling plays to make our offense more physical and less predictable. Clock management will improve since Coach Garrett will have less on his plate. A definite plus going into the upcoming season.
I expect vast improvement this year providing we see drastically improved offensive line play.
Let's hope for the best.

'Til next time,
thanks for reading
Terrance
